Editorial: War stalemate

The recent call for more deployment of US troops to Afghanistan has come with a sense of doubt that the longest war in the United States history at somehow termed into war deadlock. In straightforward language, US have failed to eliminate terrorists in its direct war in the country, showing a war stalemate. Top American military commander, Gen. Nicholson has asked for more deployment of troops in which indirectly characterized the conflict as an impasse. Afghanistan conflict has to be taken seriously, but unfortunately in these days it seen as a forgotten war. If attention not paid, the militant outfits would erode all achievements gained since 2001. The US administration should not tight-lipped on Afghanistan plans and soon announce a large-scale military strategy to put a full stop to the ongoing war. Though, President Donald Trump has said nothing about Afghanistan during his inaugural speech, but currently in a meeting with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel has agreed to continue to work together in Afghanistan to combat terrorism. Trump praised Germany’s role in Afghanistan, by thanking Merkel for her leadership in supporting NATO and its efforts in Afghanistan. Only, by thanking, president Trump can’t earn the heart of Afghans, who have been the worst victim of global war. He should evaluate situation here with deep observation. Afghan security forces have suffered unsustainable high casualties over the past two years. From January 1 through August 19, 2016, 5,523 security forces lost their lives, while 9,665 others were received injuries. Civilian causalities were also high in these years. The start of 2017 so far proved deadly for security forces as well. Insecurity is a great threat to Afghanistan development too. However, Afghan people believes that US doing little in war on terror. Such thinking is rational, because US has the capability to eliminate militants from the surface of this land in nearest time. But why US is not doing this, is a very much complicated to explain. But, however, the former president Hamid Karzai recently said that US wants to use Afghanistan as substrate to shift terrorism into Russia. He also said that US should accept its failure in Afghanistan and leave the country. Government should chose Russia, China, India and Iran as allies for ending war in Afghanistan. Since Karzai was a president of Afghanistan for more than a decade, so he knows well US and its policy. Looking to the ground situation and the surge in militancy, it would not be unreasonable to accept Karzai’s view. There is no denying that militant outfits, including Daesh terrorist are the force of evil, which must be destroyed. They are committing atrocities on a massive scale. The US should prove Afghans wrong and make indefatigable efforts in war on terror. Washington has to formulated a strong policy toward Afghanistan, and if there is will, fight against insurgents would be ended in shortest time.
