‘Govt urged to seriously probe SIGAR report’: Corruption in security bodies irked lawmakers

By Farhad Naibkhel-KBAUL: Members of the Wolesi Jirga (Lower House) of Parliament on Saturday expressed deepest concerns over the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) regarding corruption in security organs. They urged the government to seriously probe the report and take measures to address the issue.

Head of the SIGAR, John Sopko said Thursday evening at Duke University that corruption and mismanagement is the main factor behind failure of security forces in Afghanistan.

Sopko claimed that commanders selling fuel, food and even weapons of the Afghan forces to Taliban.

He said that also ghost soldier salary also goes to the commanders’ pocket.

Parliamentarians called existence of corruption in security organs “a big tragedy” for the country, asking the government and other related organs to seriously investigate the issue and take measure for solution.

“Corruption exists in police and army crew,” said member of the Lower House Aref Rahmani.

“We are aware of corruption in contracts of food, uniform and weapons in security organs.”

Even some checkpoints dealing by the enemy due to corruption, he insisted.

He said that the president’s office, security high council and parliament should combat to root out corruption in security organs.

Female MP Nahid Farid said that “broad corruption and insecurity changed to a wheel of interest for some figures.”

“Corruption will lead the system to collapse, if not contorted,” she added.

She added that Afghan government must seriously hold step to address the issue.

Another legislator Sayed Ali Kazemi said that based on some report not only Afghans, but Western clusters were also involved in corruption.

Kazemi added that high percentage of donation transferred back to abroad, so it is the time to the parliament follow the issue and clear all dimension of the issue.
