AT News Report-KABUL: At least 16 police officers were killed and two others wounded in an airstrike carried out by the US forces in southern province of Helmand, provincial officials said.
“The strike was carried out on Friday afternoon in Parchaw locality of Greshk district, after they came under foreign forces airstrike,” said provincial spokesman, Omar Zwak.
“The incident occurred while Afghan forces were engaged in an operation against Taliban militants in the area,” Zwak added.
“The area is now under control of Taliban and the incident is under inquiry.”
The US forces-Afghanistan confirmed the Afghan casualties resulted during airstrike.
“We can confirm local security personnel aligned with Afghan government forces were killed in an airstrike in the Gereshk district in Helmand province late Friday afternoon,” the US forces said in a statement.
“We like to express our deepest condolences to the families affected by this unfortunate incident.”
It said that during a US supported ANDSF operation, aerial fires resulted in the deaths of the friendly Afghan forces who were gathered in a compound.
We have notified Afghan officials of this incident. An investigation will be conducted to determine the specific circumstances that led to this incident.
It is pertained to mention that often such incidents took place in the past, which have been resulted at killing of civilians and Afghan forces, but still foreign forces particularly US forces failed to avoid such attacks repetition.
