AT Monitoring-KABUL: At least 16 innocent civilians including 10 children were killed in a mortar attack in Dawlatabad district of northwestern Faryab province, officials said on Saturday.
The district police chief, Col. Nematullah Toofan, confirmed the civilian casualties caused by a mortar that hit Tortah Atta area of the district a day earlier.
He said the security forces were engaged in establishing a checkpoint in the Jumjumah Qala area, which led to violent clash between the security forces and Taliban militants.
He added during the fierce clash heavy weapons were used by both sides.
Col. Toofan furthered it was unknown as to who had fired the shell that took lives of civilians. “According to doctors at the district clinic, the victims’ bodies were badly burnt,” the police officer noted.
Moreover, Deputy Chairman of Provincial Council Abdul Ahad Albak also confirmed that the victims were civilians.
According to clinic officials, 13 bodies, including 10 children, two women and one man, as well as three injured children and a woman, were shifted to the facility.
