AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Kandahar Provincial Police Chief, General Abdul Raziq has pledged to kick off a major operation against the insurgents in the province, aimed at clearing militants from the areas.
Gen. Raziq said this during his visit to the volatile Maiwand district of Kandahar.
Maiwand district borders the restive Sangin and Nahr-e-Saraj districts of Helmand province in the south where militants had been conducting terrorist and destructive activities.
Gen. Raziq promised residents of the Maiwand and Ghorak districts that all the areas along the crossing lines of Kandahar and Helmand would be cleared of the militants soon.
He added the operations would be kicked off by the Afghan security forces and the American forces based in Afghanistan would provide required support.
Gen. Raziq further went on saying that insecurity has continued threatening the residents of Maiwand, and Ghorak districts.
The security situation in Kandahar, once, one of the main strongholds and birth place of the Taliban militants, has improved during the recent years.
However, insurgents have continued its efforts to destabilize the key southern provinces as part of their ongoing spring offensives, conducting coordinated attacks mainly in southern Helmand province. The Taliban insurgents wanted to establish strongholds in the province, and to use it as a base for insurgency in other parts of the country in the south. But the brave Afghan security forces dashed their (militants) dream to the ground. A large number of Taliban insurgents have killed and wounded during several clearing operation carried out by the Afghan security forces.
