AT-KABUL: Security Forces in an operation retook control of the restive Ghorak district in southern Kandahar province from Taliban militants, in which over 30 militants were also killed, defense ministry said Saturday.
Gen. Dawlat Waziri, spokesman for the ministry told a press conference in Kabul the district center was “cleared” from the militants on Friday, in an already-planned operation.
“Enemy suffered heavy casualties, more than 30 fighters of them were killed and tens of them injured in the operation” Waziri said, adding a large number of weapons and ammunitions were also seized by the security forces from the militants.
Two Humvees of the Taliban, previously stolen from the security forces, were also recaptured form the militants.
Ghorak was the only district of Kandahar that had been under control of the militants for the past eight months.
The district is located in southwest of the Kandahar city on border with restive Helmand and Uruzgan provinces, where Taliban control several districts and areas.
