AT-KABUL: The Chinese Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Deng Xijun held a meeting with the National Security Adviser, Haneef Atmar at Presidential Palace, where the two sides discussed issues of mutual interests including regional political and security situations and the developments in the recent Istanbul process conference in Azerbaijan.
Highlighting the importance of close partnership and mutual cooperation among the regional countries, NSA Atmar wrote on his official Twitter account, “Regional countries had shared interests and common enemy in Afghanistan.”
Joint efforts and meaningful cooperation were required to reach the shared interests and the regional countries should take advantage of the opportunities provided by the Afghan government, NSA added.
Atmar furthered, “Countries that have relations with militant outfits should use their relations positively to bring the militants and rebels to the negotiation table.”
The Chinese envoy appreciated in strongest terms the ongoing efforts and sacrifices by the Afghan government and people to prevail regional stability and peace. “Istanbul process is a great platform to bolster regional understanding and shared goals,” the envoy added.
Xijun assured Atmar of his country’s support for the Afghan-led, and Afghan-owned peace process to put an end to the ongoing terrorism in Afghanistan which takes innocent lives of the Afghan people at highest level.
It comes at a time when the US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis visited Pakistan on Monday and held meetings with the civil and military leadership of that country, stressing on shunning terror havens in Pakistani soil. Prior to that, the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Chief said Washington will launch direct military action against terror havens, if Pakistan fails in abandoning its project of terrorism.
Chinese role is very much important to force Pakistan to turn around its project of international terrorism that has posed serious threats to regional and global peace and stability.
