Afghanistan ready for unconditional talks with Taliban

AT News Report-KABUL: The government-led High Peace Council (HPC) says it is ready to hold talks with the Taliban and other armed opposition groups without pre-conditions.

“Our message to the Taliban insurgents, and other outfits is very clear that Afghanistan is ready for unconditional talks,” the council spokesman, Sayed Ehsanollah Taheri said.

He called on the Taliban insurgents to choose any country they want for peace talks.

However, he said that talks would not include the international terrorist groups that have come to kill Afghan people.

Moreover, he said the body agrees with the closure of Taliban’s political office in Qatar. HPC backed Mohammad Haneef Attmar’s stance over closure of Taliban Qatar office, as it had been counterproductive in promoting peace talks.

“We call for the closure of any office that is not taking practical steps for peace, because the existence of such offices is meaningless,” Taheri said, while supported the standpoint of Atmar for the closure of Taliban’s political office in Doha.

Mohammed Haneef Atmar said in an interview the Taliban’s political bureau in Qatar had not helped in promoting peace talks and that was why Kabul was seeking its closure.

Taheri also expressed the body’s optimism over on the offering Kabul Process conference slated to be held on March 1st. “The conference is vital and good news for the peace process, because important countries, for the first time, will announce support for the Afghan peace program,” Taheri said.

He added that the government has held a strong diplomacy with the cooperation of the high peace council and has managed to attract the world’s support of the peace process.

The spokesman for the high peace council assured that a national consensus has been achieved and peace would be secured sooner after the regional and international consensus. He said that after the Kabul Process conference, no country was allowed to make measures without informing Afghan government.
