AT-KABUL: More than 1,500 cases of corruption including bribery, embezzlement, theft and misuse of authority have been probed during the ongoing year, the attorney general office said on Sunday.
A large number of civil and military officials are among those having cases, adding that some of them were dismissed from their jobs while some others were banned from overseas travels, said Jamshid Rasouli, spokesman of the attorney general office.
He added that the criminal joint task force and the special tribunal for corruption helped them in evaluation. “Also, more than one and half billion Afs have been so far poured to government’s treasury from the compensations and fines.”
This comes after the Transparency International put Afghanistan fourth among the corrupt countries. The Berlin-based body said in a survey for 2017 that Afghanistan was after Somalia, South Sudan and Syria in corruption.
But the attorney general said that the survey did not mean Afghanistan failed to fight corruption, but other countries had advances in this regard.
Sayed Ekram Afzali, head of the Integrity Watch Afghanistan said he was doubtful to the attorney general office’s probes. “People do not trust the attorney general office because of lack of independent organs.”
He accused the government of not willing to fight corruption, saying that the attorney general office does not dare to probe the cases of powerful individuals.
