CASA-1000 power project; Regional stakeholders to strictly supervise mega project

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) has informed on Sunday that the partner countries in CASA-1000 project have formally agreed to the establishment of a joint monitoring company to supervise the work on the mega regional project.

DABS officials said the establishment of the joint monitoring company would be fruitful in implementation of the project with an estimated length of 562km in Afghanistan. The CASA mega project would originate from Kyrgyzstan and reach Afghanistan through Tajikistan and then Peshawar city in Pakistan.

According to economic experts the Afghan government should outline working programs for building dams in the country in order to reduce dependency on imports.

“Government should focus on the establishment of dam projects, because such projects will lead to economic stability in the country and will create economic activities,” said economic analyst Sayed Massoud.

Moreover, DABS spokesman Wahidullah Tawhidi said the CASA project is of tremendous importance for Afghanistan, not only providing electricity, but other areas, including economic development and reconstruction of the country.

“Some other public utility projects will also be implemented alongside this project,” Tawhidi said.

According to the agreement, Afghanistan would receive 300 megawatt of electricity out of 1, 300. In addition to that, Afghanistan would generate 50 million UDS per year for the transit of power—highlighting the strategic importance of Afghanistan.

Similarly, infrastructure projects worth $40 million would be implemented alongside the power lines that could generate employment opportunities for Afghans.

The CASA project demonstrates landmark cooperation to be established among Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Pakistan. It would also help transform the region and significantly, an important step toward realizing the planned Central Asia-South Asia Regional Electricity Market (CASAREM) and developing inter-regional cooperation between Central Asia and South Asia.
