Taliban oppose Ulema conference in Jakarta

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: An upcoming conference of religious scholars from Afghanistan, Indonesia and Pakistan to be hosted by Indonesia, aimed at seeking a solution to the imposed war in Afghanistan has been opposed by Taliban.

Contributing to the Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process, the role of Ulema and influence of Indonesia was discussed during the various bilateral visits made by the Indonesian and Afghan leadership. President Ashraf Ghani, High Peace Council’s office bearers and the Indonesian Foreign Minister and President made visits to Jakarta and Kabul in which the Indonesian leadership announced cooperation to establish peace and stability in Afghanistan.

Last month, Indonesian President on the occasion of his official visit to Afghanistan offered to host a conference of Ulema to be from Afghanistan, Indonesia and Pakistan. This offer had welcomed by the leadership of the unity government, however, Pakistan has yet to react.

On the other side the Indonesian Ulema has started preparations for the conference, slated from March 15-19.

According to the Jakarta Globe, the Ulema conference is an attempt to find a solution to the decades-long conflict in Afghanistan.

Jakarta Globe has quoted Indonesian Vice-President Jusuf Kalla, who attended the Kabul Peace Process, as saying, “We hope the conference will result in a mutual agreement, or Fatwa, to bring peace to Afghanistan.”

Based on media reports, 30 Ulema from Indonesia and 20 each from Afghanistan and Pakistan would participate in the event.

However, Taliban’s spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid on Saturday rejected this productive event.

“The militant movement had evolved a proper system in the country, but the US had ousted it forcefully,” Mujahid alleged.

In a statement, the militant group has termed the meeting of Ulema in Indonesia or somewhere else as a misleading move.

“By giving legitimacy to the Kabul administration and with its propaganda, the US wants to deceive Muslim countries,” the statement added.

Moreover, Taliban has called on the Islamic countries to stay away from supporting peace and reconciliation events on Afghanistan. Afghan masses have expressed their optimism in the conference and urge the participants of the event to announce the terrorist and destructive activities, plotted by Pakistan-based terrorist groups as un-Islamic.
