Kabul: The French Medical Institue for Mothers and Children (FMIC) held its third graduation ceremony of the postgraduate medical education programme (PGME) on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at FMIC in Kabul.Afghanistan’s first women doctor specializing in radiology is among the 12 doctors awarded certificates of specialization by Dr Bashir Noormal, Representative of the Ministry of Public Health in Afghanistan.

Graduation marked the successful achievements of 12 postgraduate medical education students, in six different disciplines. The event marked the pinnacle of four years of hard work and dedication for the students and dignitaries from the Government of Afghanistan, Canadian and French embassies in Kabul, Aga Khan Development Network, FMIC, its partnersand civil society joined them to celebrate their achievements.

Minister of Public Health, DrNoormal said, “Ministry of Public Health is enthralled to have a group of graduates who are able to address many of the pressing healthcare issues in Afghanistan. Their success will lead to even greater successes in improving the health of the people of Afghanistan. I am happy and thrilled to have these newly graduated doctors in the healthcare system and commend their hard work and dedication.”

MrGalalEldien Ali, Head of Cooperations, Embassy of Canada in Afghanistan; Dr Eric Cheysson President of the French NGO, La Chaine de l’Espoir; Mrs Nurjehan Mawani, AKDN’s Diplomatic Representativein Afghanistan and Mr Lee Hilling, Chairman of the FMIC Board shared their remarks during the ceremony and appreciated FMIC management, graduating doctors and their families for their tireless efforts and support in making the programme such a great success.

Afghan healthcare system is in an acute need for specialist doctors. FMIC initiated its PGME programme in partnership with the Aga Khan University in April 2012 with support from the Governments of Canadaas a way of building and strengthening the local healthcare system, specially to improve access to specialized health care for women, new-born and children.The initial funding was provided by the Government of Canada through improving Maternal Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) grant continued by the Health Action Plan for Afghanistan (HAPA) grant, supported by Government of Canada, AgenceFrançaise de Développement (AFD) and the Aga Foundation, Canada.The programme is accredited by Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Health and is offered in seven disciplines – paediatric surgery, paediatric medicine, anaesthesiology, cardiology, orthopaedics, pathology and radiology. By 2020, programmes in cardiothoracic surgery and obstetrics and gynaecology are planned to be added.
