1 million paper ID cards distributed

AT News Report-KABUL: The department of the population registration said Sunday that about one million people had received paper identification cards since February, with the aim of issuing 10 million cards.

Rohullah Ahmadzai, spokesman for the department said that the paper ID cards would be issued to those who do not have or have lost their ID cards.

“We have issued one million ID cards across the country since the campaign of the paper ID card distribution began in February,” Ahmadzai said.

Meanwhile, some members of parliament are concerned of fraud possibilities, saying that one person can get more than one ID card with different identities.

But the population registration department rejects the allegations, asking the legislators to share their documents.

Aryan Yoon, a member of parliament welcomed the process of the paper ID card distribution, calling it “a positive norm for good governance”.

“Every Afghan is responsible to work for ID card distribution. Those who have ID cards can play important role in the election holding. Afghans praise government’s decision and the government should pay attention to the possible fraud in this regard,” Yoon said.

However, President Ashraf Ghani started the process of the electronic ID cards on Thursday with receiving his ID card.

The population registration department said that so far, 200 people have received electronic ID cards and 2,000 more have registered to take their cards.

Ahmadzai said that the process would soon go to people and a center would be opened in Kabul city to issue electronic ID cards to people that would be followed by other centers opened in the provinces.

More than 200 people were killed and injured in a suicide attack targeted a center of the ID card distribution and voter registration in Dasht-e-Barchi neighborhood of Kabul.
