AT-KABUL: Gunmen in northern Baghlan province on Sunday morning abducted six Indians working in a power company, provincial authorities said.

The Indian employees were abducted while they were traveling to an under-construction electricity sub-station in Khwaja Alwan district, said provincial governor’s spokesperson.

Mohammad Haqmal confirmed that the abducted Indians were employees of the KEC Company working in infrastructure projects and recently secured a contract for construction of a power sub-station located in Khwaja Alwan area of Pul-e-Khomri.

Police investigations are underway to release the abductees, he added.

Times of India newspaper has however quoted Baghlan governor Abdulhai Nematias saying the Taliban group abducted the Indian employees and moved them to the Dand-e-Shahabuddin area of Pul-e-Khumri city.Nemati further adds that the Afghan authorities have spoken with the Taliban via local people and the group said it had abducted the staff members in error, believing they were government employees.
