AfPak unanimity for peace takes shape

AT-KABUL: Kabul and Islamabad have agreed on effective implementation of a mutual peace action plan to eliminate terrorism and achieve peace, solidarity, stability, prosperity and development.

During a landmark visit to Islamabad on Sunday by a high-profile Afghan delegation led by the National Security Advisor Hanif Atmar, the two nations sought to implement the 66 commitments for peace and reconciliation under the Afghanistan-Pakistan Action Plan for Peace and Solidarity – which is considered the most important framework for AfPak mutual cooperation, said a statement issued by NSA press office.

The Afghan delegation comprised of spymaster, interior minister and president’s advisor left Kabul to Islamabad upon an official invitation of Pakistan and met with Pakistani national intelligence advisor, army chief and foreign ministry deputy.

Both sides have mutually concluded to pragmatically pursue all principles and commitments agreed as part of the peace action plan aimed at achieving peace and fighting militancy. Mutual agreement was reached that the working groups envisaged under APAPPS assign their coordinators and let their activities directly monitored by central governments in Kabul and Islamabad, said the statement.

The most important joint stance regarding peace is that in current peace policy there is no better alternative and those who won’topt for peace will face consequences, said the statement. Also it was agreed to transfer electricity from Central Asia via Afghanistan, establishing trade and transit facilities from Central Asia to Gwader and same from Gwader to Central Asia, asserted the statement. There was also unanimity for mutual coordination in forming certain mechanisms for overseeing the full implementation of APAPPS.

During Pakistan’s Prime Minister ShahidKhaqanAbbasi’s visit to Kabul back in April, the leaders of the two nations agreed on a seven-point action plan for peace and reconciliation under the Afghanistan-Pakistan Action Plan for Peace and Solidarity. Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff QamarJaved Bajwa will also visit Afghanistan soon upon President Ghani’s invitation.
