Kofi denies link with armed groups

Farhad Naibkhel-KABUL: Prominent lawmaker Fawzia Kofi who has been barred from running for October parliamentary vote heaped scorns on Sunday on election panel’s decision over the rejection of her nomination for allegedly having link with illegal armed groups, and demanded an impartial investigation on accusations slung against her.

Incumbent member of Wolesi Jirga and election hopeful Fawzia Kofi turned the heat up on the electoral complaints commission for voiding her candidacy and dismissed accusations of her involvement with armed groups as unjustified and baseless.

The barring is a corollary of an inference of the complaints panel’sspecial board that investigated links between potential candidates and illegal armed groups as well as involvement in security issues, coordinated crimes, drug smuggling and misuse of public and private assets.

Kofi accused the government of dictatorship with candidates and said those who tend to debunk weakness of the government at an international level are subject to a manhunt.

A sum of 35 election hopefuls was removed on Saturday by the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission from the final list of parliamentary elections’ candidates.

She demanded that accusations against her be probed by an impartial international commission, so that her innocence will be proved. “If the commission finds out that even one licensed pistol belongs to me, I will say farewell to politics; otherwise people should rise and not let the country nudge toward crisis because of government’s ‘dictatorial’ decisions,”she asserted.

She also called on media to increase their monitoring and follow roots and reality of the process.

Accompanied by the rejected candidates, MP Kofi warned the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections will be the worst of all, through which people will not be properly represented.

She also said the election panel work under pressure and direction of the presidential palace.

She dismissed links with illicit activities and said there were candidates with such ‘shameful’ reputation that have been approved to run for parliament. “There are, in the final list, some candidates with criminal background,” she opined.
