A recent announcement of the election panel to postpone district councils’ elections has raised the possibility of postponement of the parliamentary vote.
Political analysts and observing agencies maintain that political rift between the government and political parties, and armed militants’ control over huge chunk of Afghanistan territories has exacerbated concerns about the forthcoming elections.
The independent election commission has said that holding district elections is impossible in the face of constant security threats. Experts however believe that parliamentary elections will be impossible without district elections. They say the government had never had the intention to hold this general vote and in a situation that this election is not held, it will impinge a direct and detrimental impact on all elections.
These concerns come as political alliances have up the ante against the government and its flawed and fraud election system, threatening to boycott election if it is held with the current system.
