AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: As many as 56 Afghan journalists have been killed in different parts of the country over the last four years, NAI – supporting open media said on Monday, urging the government to help protect media staff, Zaman News reported.

NAI Chief Abdul Mujib Khilwatgar said 56 journalists have been killed since the NUG assumed power, an era he described as ‘the worst years’ for journalists.

Aside from negligence in protecting journalist community, the government is also avoiding divulging information from journalists, he said.

“Journalists are not safe in provinces,” said Khilwatgar, pleading with the concerned authorities to take measures to ensure safety and security of media staff.

Violence against journalists has seen an uptrend in recent months. A few days back, two media workers were in a car bombing in the west of Kabul, they had rushed to the area to report on another suicide attack that happened inside a wrestling gym earlier, when the second explosion occurred. More than 35 people including 2 journalists were killed and more than 90 others wounded in those bombings.
