AT-KABUL: Taliban unleashed devastating attacks in a district of central Maidan Wardak province on Sunday night, local officials confirmed, killing more than 10 policemen and overrunning the entire district.

Maidan Wardak Governor’s Spokesperson Rahim Mangal said the Taliban waged an overnight intense assault on Daymirdad district, an attack that faced immediate resistance by Afghan forces.

The assault on Daymirdad is the latest in a string of guerilla attacks of the militant Taliban on main districts to capture military outposts and scavenge government’s military gear at a time when the country is experiencing the worst effects of violence by extremist factions.

“Reinforcements were sent to the district immediately after the attack to back the local ground forces, which inflictedheavy casualty on militants,” he maintained, “More than 60 terrorists were killed and tens wounded in the firefight, which also left 10 police forces martyred”.

Mangal rejected collapse of the district to the Taliban and said that government forces were fighting off militants to drive them out of the district.

However, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed that Taliban had captured Daymirdad district Sunday night and that 70 Afghan troops were killed and some weapons destroyed.
