AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Following US efforts to bring a negotiated settlement to the ongoing war in Afghanistan, the Russia—a state who his various of issues with US, has said to hold a grand meeting on Afghanistan peace at the end of October.
Moscow’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan Affairs, Zamir Kabulov expressed his country’s readiness to host Afghan peace conference—an effort that has been postponed, Zamannews reported.
The conference was about to take place on 4th September, but has been postponed after telephonic conversation between President Ashraf Ghani and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
During discussion, they agreed to postpone the conference.
However, so far Afghan officials did not comment over the meeting, as they restrained attending Moscow conference on Afghanistan last time after Taliban group said they will not hold talks with Afghan delegation.
However, the Foreign Ministry in that time has emphasized on Afghan-owned and Afghan-owned process, saying any peace efforts must be consulted with Afghan government.
The conference once again took headline when US envoy for Afghanistan’s reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad has met with Taliban officials in Qatar, in the midst of a push by the Trump administration to restart peace talks with the Taliban.
Khalilzad kicked of his peace mission by visiting Afghanistan first and held meetings with Afghan leaders and other high-ranking officials, and took flights to Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and UAE in his 11-day trip amid at facilitating direct dialogue between Afghan government and Taliban group.
Khalilzad landed back to Afghanistan today to share the outcome of his meetings with Afghan leadership.
