AT News Report-KBAUL: The Taliban confirmed they have held direct contact with US envoy Zalmay Khalilzad in Qatar in a preliminary discussion about future peace talks, a statement of the insurgent group said on Saturday.
Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said the militant group’s negotiating team has met with the US peace team led by Dr. Zalmai Khalilzad on October 12th in Doha and discussed an end to US occupation and a peaceful solution to the conflict.
The team included head of the group’s political office Haji Shir Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai and deputy head Mawlawi Abdul Salam Hanafi, and members Shaikh Shahabudin Delawar, Qari Din Mohammad Hanif, Haji Mohammad Zahid Ahmadzai and Mohammad Sohail Shaheen.
The Taliban called presence of foreign forces a serious obstacle in reaching a solution to the conflict.
At the end of the meeting, both sides agreed to continue their meetings in the future.
