KABUL: More than 16 civilians, including women and children, were killed in an overnight airstrike targeting a Taliban insurgent in eastern Kunar province on Friday, officials said.
The airstrike launched by Afghan security forces in Shaltan district of Kunar province, the governor spokesman Abdul Ghani Mosamem said, killed 38 Taliban and Al-Qaeda extremists including a commander and four foreign insurgents.
Akey Taliban commander, known as Mawia, was also killed in the strike, which left 10 insurgents wounded, he said. Confirming civilian casualties, he said an investigation is needed into the civilian deaths.
Member of Provincial Council of Kunar province Latif Fazli, said that according to reports 16 civilians including children and four women were killed during operation conducted by Afghan forces in the district.
He also confirmed that 38 Taliban insurgents including number of key commanders were killed after their gathering was targeted by Afghan forces in Shaltan district.
