KABUL: Police have surrounded house and office of former jihadi commander Din Mohammad Joraat for 24 hours, after he refused to hand over government vehicles and ammunition he was using while serving in government.
Joraat was working as an official at the National Security Council and was given armored vehicles, weapons and ammunition. He now refuses to give back them, and police have given him a three-day deadline to give the stuff back.
Joraat’s aides say he has no illegal government vehicles and weapons.
Some Kabul residents and parliament members believe the government’s decision was prematurely and that the president uses force and dictatorship against influential figures.
Lawmakers say the government should first prove that Joraat has weapons and irresponsible armed men and then make decision.
The government had taken similar measures against powerful people in Kabul and some provinces, but such measures were denounced as campaigns for presidential elections.
