KABUL: At least five people have died, hundred houses destroyed and roads washed away after heavy rains led to torrential flooding in the western Afghanistan’s provinces, local official said Wednesday.
Two were killed in western Herat province, while three in Farah after floods smacked their houses.
In a statement, Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority said the floods occurred in Kuhsan, Zindajan, Guzara, Enjil and Karukh districts. It also confirmed that over 500 homes have been damaged in Herat alone.
Provincial governor spokesman, Jelani Farhad said heavy rain and snow caused closure of highways.
Herat officials said due to heavy rain and snow, flights into and out of Herat have been cancelled and the Herat-Islam Qala, Herat-Torghondi and Herat-Kandahar highways have been closed.
A team has been assigned to quickly help floods victim families, said Mohammad Aslam Sayas, deputy of Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority. “The team was tasked to assess financial and human losses from recent floods.”
