AT News Report-KABUL: At least 20 members of the border police have been killed in a Taliban assault in the southern Kandahar province, reports say, as the militants escalate their offensive ahead of fresh peace talks with the US.
A security official who wished not to be named said on Saturday that Taliban fighters attacked a check post of the Afghan Border Police in Shorbak district on Saturday night, in which over 20 officers were killed and some others are missing.
There is no reaction by provincial security officials yet, but Tadeen Khan, Kandahar Police Chief said that nine brave police men were martyred in militants attack.
“Border police have killed 16 militants and wounded nine others while the militants trying to attack the border police check point in Shorabak district. Our nine brave police men were also martyred during the operation,” he tweeted.
At least 30 members of the border police were killed in a Taliban attack in Kandahar’s Shorabak on the border with Quetta, wrote Bilal Sarwary, an Afghan journalist, in his twitter account.
“At least 11 members of the border police wounded. Some went missing. One armored Humvee burned ad one armored Humvee and weapons taken by Taliban,” he quoted sources told him.
This came after a key Taliban member was detained by Kandahar police while he was trying to cross the point to enter Pakistan.
He was Taliban-designated Governor for Shahr-e-Safa area of Tarnek wa Jaldek in Zabul that has been detained by the police during operations in Arghistan district of the Kandahar province.
Additionally, his deputy governor and four other Taliban were killed and the police seized their weapons and communication equipment.
