U.S. reaffirms supporting Afghan forces amid peace efforts

KABUL: Gen. Joseph Votel US CENTCOM commander met Tuesday Afghan National Security Advisor Hamdullah Mohib at his office, where he reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to continue supporting the Afghan security forces.

According to a statement by Mohib’s office, both sides discussed a broad range of security issues, including Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) operational capabilities and peace process.

During the meeting, Mohib thanked US government for enduring.

In the meeting, Gen. Votel reaffirmed that the people and government of the United States support Afghan-led and Intra-Afghan peace process and called on regional countries to practically work more for eliminating terrorism. He also reaffirmed to support and equips the ANDSF.

In February 12, the U.S. Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan made unannounced visit to Afghanistan, where he discussed with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani a broad range of defense issues, including the importance of the U.S.-Afghanistan security relationship and of achieving a political settlement to the war that ensures Afghanistan is never again used as a safe haven from which terrorists can plan and launch terrorist attacks against the United States and its allies.

This comes when US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad held several meetings with Afghan leadership, and youth, taking the issue of peace with the.

So far he held fourth round of meetings with Taliban representatives in Qatar, and will soon have them in table for fifth round of discussions about Afghan peace with intention to end the longest war.

He said this time he would talk with Taliban members about a possible ceasefire and direct talks with the Afghan government that so far been ignored by the group.
