KABUL: At least 28 people were killed over 30 were injured after recent heavy rains caused flash floods in western Afghanistan, official said Friday.
In western Herat province, nine people were killed and five injured after the floods caused by Thursday’s rains hit most parts of the province, destroying thousands acres of arable land and hundreds of houses, forcing thousands of people to leave for safety, Jailani Farhad, spokesman for the province said.
In neighboring Badghis province eight people including three children were killed and another six were injured in the flooding. Hundreds of acres of pistachio forest were washed away.
Two shepherd boys along with hundreds of their sheep were also disappeared in the flood water in the province, Jamshid Shohabi, the spokesman for the governor said.
In northwestern Faryab province 10 people including women and children lost their lives while another 20 were injured in the heavy flooding, JavidBaidar, the governor’s spokesman said.
He said hundreds of shops of the poor citizens were destroyed by the flood in which 3,000 acres of land and over 2,500 houses were also destroyed and damaged he said.
Roads to several remote areas were also closed as the flood water destroyed tens of road bridges and the road in some parts of the province.
He said the scale of the damage and loses was high and provincial administration was unable to respond properly to the disaster Baidar said.
The number of those killed and injured was expected to raise in coming hours as authorities were still busy to determine the full scale of the damage and loses.
Flash floods in the past one month have killed over 100 and injured another 250 while destroying more than 18,000 houses according to the data by the State Ministry for Disaster Management of the country.
