US, Pakistan officials discuss Afghan peace efforts

KABUL: US Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Alice Wells and Special Representative for Afghan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad arrived in Islamabad on Monday, where they discussed issues related to the Afghan peace process with the Pakistani officials.

Pakistani’s Foreign Office Additional Secretary Aftab Khokar held delegation-level talks with top American envoys.

According to the Foreign Office spokesman, the two sides held regular consultations with Pakistani officials along with talks on the Afghan peace process.

The delegation-level talks covered the Afghan peace process and bilateral relations.

On Friday, Khalilzad had said Prime Minister Imran Khan’s stance on Afghanistan had the potential to positively transform the region and give Pakistan a leading role.

Imran Khan on Thursday had underlined Pakistan’s unconditional support for Afghan peace process and urged the Taliban to call off their spring offensive

 “Greatly appreciate @ImranKhan’s statement yesterday on #Afghanistan. His appeal for reduction of violence and policy against promoting internal conflict in other nations has potential to positively transform the region and give #Pakistan a leading role,” Khalilzad tweeted on Friday.

“Pakistan has committed all diplomatic and security capital to success of peace process,” Prime Minister Imran Khan said in the statement.

Before to leave Kabul to Islamabad, Zalmay Khalilzad said he discussed wide range of issues, including intra-Afghan talks during his stay in Kabul.

In his tweet the US special envoy said: “Spent the weekend in Kabul. Had the opportunity to meet with Pres. Ghani and CEO Abdullah a few times, as well as other political stakeholders. Particularly enjoyed my time with youth leaders and the town hall with Afghans from a cross section of society.”

“In all of these meetings, we discussed a range of topics related to the Afghan Peace Process, including how we make intra-Afghan dialogue happen as soon as possible. Will take the input I received to Islamabad and Doha for my next round of discussions.”

Khalilzad reached Islamabad from Kabul, where discuss Afghan reconciliation process with the Pakistani officials.
