KABUL: Ata Mohammad Noor, a powerful political opposition to President Ghani’s government says that extending government’s term would be illegal, threatening that the country would be led to “serious crisis” if the president stays in power after his term ends on May 22.
Noor who was fired by President Ghani as governor of Balkh province last March, warned on Tuesday that the president would face what happened to Dr. Najib, the late president who was killed by Taliban in 1996.
Meanwhile, he rejected the ongoing Consultative Loya Jirga on peace with Taliban as “not for peace, but management of peace”, accusing Ghani of trying to seek ways to stay in power by such gatherings.
Noor has been an outspoken critic to President Ghani since he lost his position as ruler of the strategic area in the north.
Ghani says he would keep working as president until the next president takes office through the September polls, in which he is one of 18 hopefuls.
