KABUL: The United States urges that a peace deal must be reached in Afghanistan before the presidential elections slated for September 28.
The US Ambassador to Kabul, John Bass said Saturday that peace was a priority for Washington, despite the importance of the elections.
“We need to work simultaneously on both. Peace is our priority and as I spoke to many people, none of them has said that elections be held when war is continuing and people are killed,” Bass said.
Bass said he didn’t know if the two side negotiators manage to reach a deal in the ongoing round of the talks in Qatar.
He said this depends on Taliban to provide the opportunity of understanding.
The US diplomat emphasized that Afghans should be ready for negotiations with Taliban so the rights of all Afghans be secure.
The US envoy for Afghan peace, Zalmay Khalilzad sat for the seventh time with Taliban Saturday in Qatar.
