KABUL: The government of Afghanistan says that the
withdrawal of 4,000 US soldiers would not put a negative impact on the war
condition.
Sediq Sediqqi, President Ghani’s Spokesman, however said Sunday that the US
military presence would be a need for counter-terrorism.
Western media said this week that US President Donald Trump was to announce the drawdown of 4,000 soldiers from Afghanistan as soon as this week.
The US has currently 13,000 troops in Afghanistan and the number would decrease to some 9,000. American soldiers are mostly training and advising the Afghan security forces after their combat mission ended in December 2014.
“There are still short-term and long-term terrorist threats
to Afghanistan and the US. Of course, a large number of US soldiers will remain
in Afghanistan to jointly launch this mission,” Sediqqi said.
The troop withdrawal report comes as the US is engaged in peace negotiations
with Taliban.
