AT-KABUL: Pledging to improve the sub-standard canalization system in Kabul city, the Kabul Municipality (KM) on Wednesday kicked off work on construction of a drainage system in 10th jurisdiction of the city.
“The sanitation system is 1,700 meters in length, and has the capacity of draining huge amount of sewages. The project costs Afs53 million and will be completed in one year,” said Mohammad Akram Aslami, the deputy chief of the Kabul Municipality.
He said that most of Kabul’s septic wells and drainage system are irregular and they don’t meet international standards, adding that poor sewerage system has polluted Kabul’s underground water. “The municipality is committed to improve the system in near future,” he vowed.
He mentioned that the municipality would hold a national conference in near future that would discuss construction of septic wells based on international norms as well as preventing of sub-standard sewers in the city. “Due to lack of standard canalization system, the citizens face several problems during winter season. We will overcome this problem by building standard canalization system in the city,” he added.
Aslami assured that the municipality has different development plans on hand which include construction of roads, greenery projects, construction of sidewalks and recreational places in Kabul.
He also said that the municipality is committed to plant one million saplings in Kabul city in order to overcome air pollution in the city.
Majority of houses built in past 13 years are out of the master plan drafted by the Kabul Municipality in the past, therefore the city is faced with huge problems in every season of the year.
Aslami said they were working on schemes to collect more data about the master plan. “Implementation of the master plan will take at least 15 years,” he concluded.
