KABUL: In the past two days, at least 31 pro-government forces have been killed in the latest Taliban attacks in two Northern Provinces of Afghanistan.
14 public uprising members were killed on Monday in Jawzjan province—while 17 others were killed on Sunday in Takhar province, after deadly Taliban attacks on their check posts.
In Takhar attack, four more were wounded, provincial governor spokesman, Marouf Azar said, adding the attack occurred in Faizabad district of the province at around 3:30 local time on Monday early morning.
Soon after assault, the Afghan security forces immediately took action and killed seven Taliban militants in retaliation, the spokesman said. “Five others were wounded in counter-attack by the Afghan forces.”
According to him, additional forces dispatched to the area, and the insurgents failed to resist and fled the area. “The checkpoint is under control of Afghan security forces.”
On Sunday’s Taliban attack, at least 17 pro-government forces were killed in northern Takhar province.
Provincial Police Spokesman, Khalil Aseer said the militants stormed a camp of local uprising members in Khwaja Bahauddin district late on Saturday night.
The Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility of the attack, putting the dead toll to 21 government militia forces—while officials confirmed 17. The spokesman also claimed that their fighters did not receive any casualties. Taliban claims are often exaggerated.
