AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: After taking full control of security from international troops, the security forces kicked off a huge military operation in southern Helmand province to boost up security in its northern districts, said official on Sunday.
“Around 4,000 Afghan National Army (ANA) troops have joined the operation,” said Omar Zwak, spokesman for Helmand governor, adding that the operation codenamed ‘Zulfiqar’ has been launched in Sangin district and would be extended to other districts.
He said the ANA troops would earn air support by the Afghan Air Force (AAF), if needed.
He added the operation was aimed at weeding out militants and establishing Afghan forces’ security check points in the areas for better maintenance of law-and-order there.
He said the operation in Helmand was a wide range crackdown against militants and officials in Kabul would decide when to call for the support of international troops.
According to him, the operation would be extended from Sangin to Kajaki, Musa Qala, Washir and Nawzad districts.
Afghan security forces shouldered full responsibility of security in January this year. They relieved huge support by the nation as different ceremonies were held countrywide that supported and applauded the security forces for their utmost efforts and sacrifices in ensuring safety of citizens.
