KABUL: Former President, Hamid Karzai called on the government not to insist on the ceasefire as a precondition for intra-Afghan talks.
In an interview with the BBC Pashto, the former president emphasized that any way leading Afghans to peace should be put in act.
Karzai rejected government’s urge for ceasefire if the demand hampers peace process.
President Ghani and his administration are emphasizing on a ceasefire before they could go to negotiations with the Taliban. The militants have disagreed on the ceasefire in meetings with the US negotiator Zalmay Khalilzad, but have vowed to reduce violence.
Karzai welcomed the violence reduction agreement as “big news for Afghans”, calling on his successor to not insist on ceasefire as a precondition for talks.
He asked President Ghani to immediately start negotiations with the Taliban and put an end to the current ongoing violence through dialogues.
Karzai said that the people of Afghanistan support any efforts that help them gain peace and reduce violence.
The former president said that now it is a suitable situation for peace talks, arguing that both the government and Taliban need to use it.
