KABUL: The Taliban fighters carried out attack on several checkpoints of the Afghan security forces in the northern Baghlan province, in which 13 police personnel were killed, officials said on Tuesday.
In condition of anonymity, a provincial security source said the militants stormed into several checkpoints on Monday night in Samt-e-Siwom area of the capital city, Pul-e-Khumri. According to him, the Taliban fighters have been supported by some infiltrators in the military ranking. Four Hamvees have been destroyed and the checkpoints have been set on fire, he said.
Meanwhile, the provincial police spokesman, Jawid Faisal confirmed the attack, but didn’t provide any information about the casualties. “The casualties have been inflicted on both sides, police and Taliban,” he added.
The checkpoints are located on the Baghlan-Samangan highway, where the Taliban claimed that around 17 police officers have been killed.
The attacks come at a time while the US and Taliban have been seeking a peace deal to end the decades conflicts in Afghanistan. The Afghan government, who has been sidelined in the peace negotiations so far, emphasized on a ceasefire agreement prior to any peace deal.
However, the Taliban is said to have offered a proposal of reduction of violence to the US top negotiator, Zalmay Khalilzad – a peace stockbroker who held 11th round of peace talks with the Taliban, but remained empty handed so far.
