KABUL: At least 13 policemen were killed in fierce clash with militants in the Maiwand district of southern Kandahar province on Monday, the governor’s spokesman said.
Zia Durrani told Pajhwok Afghan News that insurgents mounted attack on police when the latter were defusing a huge ammunitions cache after recovering it in the district late in the evening.
Six policemen were killed in the attack, he added. But a resident of the locality wishing to go unnamed said 13 police officials were gunned down in the showdown.
He said Taliban first detonated explosive in a house in Farang village and when a police contingent visited the area to investigate they came under rebels attack.
Thirteen policemen were died in the ensuing battle, he added. Col. Sultan Mohammad, police commander for Zherri and Panjwai districts confirmed 13 police officers had been killed in the firefight.
However, Taliban have not yet commented on the clash. (PAN)
