KABUL: In the wake of a ‘hasty’ reforms in the ministry of foreign affairs, Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah Abdullah has issued an executive order advising bureaucrats to apply caution and avoid unpremeditated diplomatic appointments and reshuffles in the name of administrative reforms.
“In line with the agreement of the national unity government and in deference to safeguarding national interests, I hereby order the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to seriously abstain from any abrupt reforms and reshuffles in the ministry and its diplomatic missions abroad,” he said in the decree he issued on Sunday.
Abdullah ordered the Secretariat of the Council of Ministers to supervise the implementation of the decree to ensure that solid diplomatic reforms take place. This came as President Ghani’s administration is under fire for systematic favoritism in high-ranking appointments to Ghani’s own ethnic group.
Appointments in diplomatic missions appear to favor those close to the president under the aegis of reforms and given the appearance of ethnic diversity. The accusation has been leveled by a Chief Executive Abdullah’s aide Omid Meisam, who alleged ‘deliberate ethnic favoritism’ in the president’s awarding of sensitive jobs.
