KABUL: Afghanistan’s ongoing political crisis is the result of the U.S. divisive and contemptuous policies and ways towards our nation, said former president Hamid Karzai, a day after the country witnessed parallel inauguration of two presidents.
Afghanistan encountered a perilous moment after its two pretenders to the throne – partners in the erstwhile national unity government, Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah – were each sworn in as president in separate ceremonies on Monday. The feud is risking plunging the country’s political future and reconciliation prospects into chaos, as peace negotiations with the hardline Taliban loom.
“Had the U.S. been honest in its effort to create a rapprochement between the feuding elections rivals, this political fissure would have been averted before the oath-taking ceremonies could take place,” Karzai said in a statement.
Amid thorny domestic issues, Afghanistan’s bitter political feud has sent shockwaves through the world after the U.S. attempt to seek an ‘entente cordiale’ to election rivals ended in an abrupt fiasco. This geopolitical earthquake could worsen even more.
Karzai alluded to his face-to-face meetings with U.S. officials, in particular the U.S. special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad, saying that he had voiced his concerns to them about the United States’ dishonesty in its peace efforts in Afghanistan.
“I emphasized that the elections and peace negotiations should result in consolidation of the country’s national unity and creation of a formidable and legitimate government,” said Karzai.
He said the ongoing crisis serves a sobering wakeup call for the Afghan people. “There is an ever increasing need for our nation to stand united and vigilant to thwart foreign machinations which threaten stability and unity of our country. History witnessed that this nation can overcome this bedlam,” Karzai concluded.
