KABUL: The self-proclaimed president, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah has asked for the release of two former female electoral commissioners that were found guilty and sentenced to jail during 2018 parliamentary election. Abdullah asked reinforcement agency to look up to the matter and get Maliha Hassan and Hamira Haqmal out of the jail due to covid-19 outbreak, and also their health condition is not good.
Citing the two commissioners’ health condition, Abdullah urged the law enforcement agency to take “essential legislative steps” in regards.
Recently, Women and Children Legal Research Foundation has sent to President Ashraf Ghani, asking for their release. Referring to the letter, Abdullah wrote on Facebook that there are satisfaction reasons for the release of these two inmates.
The detainees are suffering from incurable diseases, the foundation said, adding their remaining in the prison amid a highly risk of covid19 would put their life endangered.
After the Afghanistan 2018 parliamentarian election got accused of fraudulence and corruption, the primary court has sentenced a number of electoral commissioners to five years term prison.
Citing the President Ashraf Ghani’s decree to free some inmates from the Afghan government’s prisons to avoid the spread of coronavirus, the committee said the two commissioners meet the essential conditions. President Ghani had earlier signed a decree which allows the release of some women, children, sick and prisoners with an age of over 55, as Covid19 is spreading its infection across Afghanistan.
