KABUL: The National Security Council has turned down the reports that say the Afghan government has temporarily halted the prisoner release process of the Taliban inmates.
Spokesman for the council, Javid Faisal told Afghanistan times on Thursday that the release would be continuing and that there is no plan on suspension of the process.
According to some earlier reports, the Afghan government had suspended the prisoners’ release after the US envoy for Afghanistan reconciliation, Zalmay held talks with the group’s political office in Qatar to boost up practical implementation of the United States’ February 29th’s peace deal with the militants.
After weeks of pressure by the US Department of States, the Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has signed a decree of Taliban prisoners’ release.
The prisoners would be swearing that they would not rejoin to fighting against the Afghan security forces, the government officials said.
The Taliban have freed 20 people in return for their 361 prisoners released by the Afghan government during this week. However according to southern Kandahar- where the militants released the 20 custodies- officials, the released people have been civilians and that were not government employees.
The Taliban Qatar based political office’s spokesman, Suhail Shaheen said that the release of the prisoners, held in the militants’ custody would be continuing.
