Virus cases surge to 1,176

KABUL: There are 84 new cases of covid-19 in Afghanistan, bringing the tally to 1,176, said Ministry of Public Health on Wednesday. These cases were recorded in the past 24 hours as the Afghan officials are grappling with the disease with fragile health system.

Speaking in a press conference, Wahidullah Mayar said 28 cases were recorded in Kabul, 22 in Kandahar, three in Herat, two in Ghazni, four in Kapisa, six in Nangarahar, three in Kunar, two in Zabul, four in Helmand, five in Nimroz, and one each in Parwan, Bamyan, Laghman, Paktika and Farah provinces, bringing the confirmed cases to 1,176.

Seven patients in Kabul, five in Herat, two in Farah and one each in Kapisa and Badakhshan had recovered during this period, Mayar said. Four have died from the virus within 24 hours, he lamented. Number of recovery jumped to 166, and the deaths are 44 as of today.

Ignoring the regulation of lockdown in capital has caused number of cases to be higher in Kabul, Mr. Mayar said. He warned of catastrophe if ignorance continue, pressing the residents to listen to the precautionary advices of the health department.

Cases are increased in Kabul, a trouble omen. Health officials are looking up to stricter lockdown in major cities to help stop the wild spread of the virus.

Covid-19 has strengthening its grasp in Afghanistan that even reached to the center of power—the Pesidential Palace. President Ashraf Ghani and the First Lady were tested for covid-19. The results were negative, and all precautions are in place to make sure his work environment is safe and healthy, his spokesman Sediq Sedqqi said.

The number of deaths from the COVID-19 disease globally is so far more than 177,496, and more than 2.5 million have been infected with the virus, according to Johns Hopkins University.
