KABUL: Following waves of murmurs about Russian having paid bounties to the Taliban-linked militants to target the American soldiers in Afghanistan, the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo held a phone call with the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov.
The US Department of State said the counterparts discussed the arrangement of the UN 75th anniversary, which is set to be held among the representatives of Moscow, Beijing, US, Paris and UK. The state department has not released any further details of the meeting.
The New York Times earlier quoted some secret sources as saying that Moscow has paid bounties to the Taliban-linked militants to target the US troops in Afghanistan.
However the report was turned down by the US President Donald Trump and his administration. The Taliban and Russia also dined the report.
This comes amid a historic opportunity for peace in Afghanistan through intra-Afghan talks. However, the process has seen deadlock as the government and Taliban appears reluctant to reach a political settlement that could end the longest war in the country.
