KABUL: The government says it has released 80 Taliban’s “dangerous” prisoners as the first step to release all 400 inmates the Loya Jirga over the weekend agreed to be freed.
Taliban had earlier threatened to resume attacks on government institutions if all of their 5,000 prisoners agreed in the US peace deal were not freed.
President Ghani’s administration has said that the rest of 320 prisoners charged for big crimes would be also freed in the near future.
A government statement says that the release was carried with the aim of goodwill and trust building for the intra-Afghan talks as well as to end any other excuses by to evade the negotiations.
The Taliban have pledged to sit with the government delegation soon after their last prisoner was released.
But political analysts accuse Taliban of dependence, saying the group is not really seeking a peaceful end to the long war.
They say that Taliban would offer another pretext to postpone the talks.
