AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Following execution of five Afghans in Iran, a lawmaker accused the government of turning blind eye to the issue.
Nahid Farid, a member of the international relations committee of Wolesi Jirga, said the incumbent government should take drastic steps to put an end to execution of Afghan prisoners in Iran.
“Justice should be done, but the matter of concern is that most of Afghan prisoners don’t have access to lawyer and the prosecution system is unfair,” she said, calling on the government to spare no efforts to resolve the issue.
Farid urged the government of national unity to give priority to this issue in its foreign policy.
This came at a time that five Afghan refugees hanged to death on charges of drug trafficking in Iran were buried in Northern Takhar province the other day.
According to reports there are more than 5,000 Afghan prisoners in Iran.
The acting governor of Takhar province, Sunatullah Temor, said that dead bodies of five Afghan executed in Iran were returned to the province. “Tens of other Afghan prisoners have telephoned their families and said that they were sentenced to death,” he added.
