Obama lauds Afghan leaders for peace efforts

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: The US President Barack Obama the other day held a video conference with President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah.

A press release issued by President’s media office said that during the contact the three sides discussed the current situation in Afghanistan and their efforts to improve Kabul-Islamabad ties.

The source said that President Obama commended Ghani and Abdullah on their leadership in promoting an Afghan peace process to end the conflict and their initiative to improve Afghanistan-Pakistan relations.

The leaders discussed the ongoing efforts of Afghan forces to improve security, and the importance of countering extremist threats from groups like Al Qaeda.

President Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah are scheduled to arrive in the US later this month, their first trip to the country after coming to power last year as a result of controversial presidential elections.

The source said that President Obama encouraged to accelerate Afghan progress towards forming an inclusive national unity government, and expressed his expectation that their visit to Washington would demonstrate their mutual commitment to a strengthened US-Afghan strategic partnership.

President Ghani thanked the US government for its support to Afghanistan during the past 13 years and as well as for the sacrifices of American troops’ sacrifices in the country in war on terror and ensuring security here.

Hinting at capability and skills of Afghan security forces, Ghani said that the national security forces have quitted the defensive tactic and now they have the responsibility of engineering military operations against militants.

During the same occasion, Chief Executive Abdullah, thanked the US for cooperation with Afghanistan in different sectors. He hinted at improvements made in different fields in the country and said that the government and the people of Afghanistan had a united vision about durable security and peace in the country, and both the government and the people consider peace as their priority.
