Abdullah vows reforms in electoral bodies

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Confessing that the new government had not done what it pledged ahead of its formation, the Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, said Friday that the people of Afghanistan should not worry about their future, as the government was committed to overcome the current challenges and lead the country towards progress and improvement.

Hinting at the agreement that established the national unity government, Abdullah said that the government was committed to bring reforms in electoral bodies as it was established based on an agreement of which reforms in election commission was the basis.

He told a session commemorating the 20th death anniversary of Abdul Ali Mazari that the long-suffering Afghans had finally found the opportunity to get rid of challenges and miserable situation which was a legacy of decade of conflicts in this country.

He said that they were well aware of the fact that transparent election was a key demand of the Afghan people and bringing reforms in electoral bodies was one of the fundamental issues in formation of the national unity government.

The national unity government was formed after the controversial presidential election in June 2014. President Ghani had promised to bring reforms in electoral bodies. However, there is no sign of improvement in this regard in first six months of their tenure.

On the same occasion, the deputy chief executive, Mohammad Mohaqiq, said that he was concerned about delay in formation of the proposed commission for bringing reforms in election commissions. He added that the CEO wanted the problem to be resolved, adding that the president was also ready to issue a decree for formation of reforms commission.

He added that the electoral system would be fixed based on demands of the nation in an attempt to make the upcoming polls credible and acceptable for the common masses.
