KABUL: Amid escalating violence across the country, the government has appoints new police chiefs for 100 districts in 29 provinces as part of plans to ramp up security.
During an introduction ceremony on Saturday, President Ghani said the new police appointments will help boost law enforcement and police administration at district level, said the president’s office in a statement.
Afghanistan is enduring one of its worst years of violence since the ouster of the Taliban with a steep uptick in militant attacks and a subsequent rise in civilian casualties.
In his address, First Vice President Amrullah Saleh urged the newly-assigned district police chiefs to serve the law and help bolster security situation in their respective districts.
National Security Advisor Hamdullah Mohib called on the new security officials to stem the resurgence of insurgency and fight for the cause of the republic government.
He said all the 100 police chiefs had been selected in a transparent recruitment process.
Head of Development of Security Sector Leadership of the Office of National Security Council Zia Asi said that based on president order the work over changing of 285 districts’ police chiefs have been started and the committee after 45 days assessment selected 100 officers out of 600 and appointed them in the district of 29 provinces.
