KABUL: Officials in the southern province of Helmand say that defense and security forces plan to reopen the vital highway connecting Kandahar to the neighboring Helmand.
The highway was blocked by Taliban fighters since they attacked to capture the provincial capital of Lashkar Gah some two weeks back.
Provincial Governor Yasin Khan said Monday that a Special Force unit was responsible for the reopening operation.
Khan promised that the passengers’ problems would be soon solved once the road was reopened.
Taliban still hold parts of Lashkar Gah city and Khan said that the security forces launched first operation to push the militants back from the provincial capital.
The highway connects six provinces to each other in the south where people are suffering from raising of foodstuff prices.
