KABUL: Acting Defense Minister Asadullah Khalid on Tuesday came up with different remarks about foreign troops in contrast over reports of drawdown or lessening, he said that the foreign troops could likely increase in the country.
Addressing the parliament, Khalid said that the foreign troops would not leave Afghanistan, but said the Afghan security forces “are capable of defending their country” if the foreign troops pulled out from Afghanistan.
Giving details about the military progress, the acting defense minister said that the Afghan security forces carry out 96 percent of the operations against the militants. He also accused the Taliban of being reluctant to cease a reduction in violence and lay out a sustainable peace.
The Taliban’s plan to overrun Uruzgan, Farah and Ghazni provinces failed, he said. The surveillance drones are supervising 60 percent soil of the country. The Russian choppers and aircrafts are being replaced with American aircrafts throughout a specific process.
Khalid cited the remarks amid US troops withdrawal from Afghanistan which was agreed in a peace deal signed on February 29th between the US and Taliban in Qatari capital, Doha. The US President Donald Trump, who failed in the 2020 US Presidential Election, is working with the Pentagon to bring back home all troops from Afghanistan, according to the US media report. He will stay at office till 20 January next year.
The US expected the controversial intra-Afghan negotiations to reach a political settlement that could end the longest war in Afghanistan.
